Another thing that really shocked me was Neal Shoemaker. He said that the black people received their names after the jobs that they did when working for their white slave-master. I thought it was interesting how he still carried the name "Shoemaker" after one of his relatives who was a shoemaker.
My favorite part of the trip was the Apollo Theater. I thought it was absolutely incredible to be in a place of so much history and where many famous artists have performed. The tour guide at the Apollo, Billy, was an amazing singer and to be that is just amazing. He was full of energy and loved being around us, which made me love being around him too.
The Apollo Theatre and Billy reminded me of a place that I go on vacation to, Woodloch Pines. I go there every year with my family and we absolutely love it. It reminded me of the Apollo Theatre because every year when we go there, there is a fancy night where everyone dresses up in their best clothes. In addition to this, there is a performance of singers that we get to watch and be entertained by. The signers are amazing as well as the dance moves and songs.

Hey CHESTER! =]. um I really liked your post and I can totally relate because when i was little i went to woodloch pines with my family and the komrowers. it really was so much fun. also, i liked how you said Neil Shoemaker called us his family. i also felt that it showed that he was able to forget the racism that is still prevalent in our country and just enjoy the trip! I liked the points you chose to highlight about the trip to Harlem. I agree that Billy was so animated and so full of character, and just altogether very entertaining. I hadn't known why they kept calling Neil, "Neil Shoemakers", so I'm happy I read your blog to be enlightened in that regard. It is very interesting that those nicknames stick like that. I wonder if Neil minds, or if has any preference at all. Like you, I, too, was comforted & moved by Neil's persistence in calling us his family. I thought he was so sweet, and his appreciation for us was clearlyyyy conveyed (because he really just kept repeating it). It's so great that he is so appreciative that we come to tour Harlem and he is able to shed some light to people interested in a topic he knows especially well. Ok, that's all. Nice blog!
